With our autumn exhibition now open, we invite both amateur and professional photographers alike to enter our #MarsinChi Photographic Competition*.

Whether you visit Luke Jerram's Mars installation by day or during one of our special Evening Viewings, we want to see your stunning images of Mars suspended in our ancient Nave until Sunday 10th November.

The competition will be judged by acclaimed photographer Jakub Bors of Chichester Photos. Each Friday during the exhibition period, Jakub will select a winning photograph from our shortlist of images.

Follow these simple steps to enter:

  1. Capture a photo of Luke Jerram’s Mars within the Cathedral’s magnificent Nave.
  2. Share your photograph on social media (Instagram, Facebook, X) using the hashtag: #MarsinChi and remember to tag us.
  3. Each week, Jakub will select one winning photograph. The winning photograph and photographer will be announced on our social media channels on Friday 25th October, Friday 1st November and Friday 8th November.
  4. Each winner will receive a beautiful puzzle featuring a stunning image of Chichester Cathedral at Night, generously donated by Jakub himself.

Herę, our judge Jakub kindly shares some of his top tips on capturing Mars using a smartphone:

Getting your focus just right: With the sculpture rotating in the dim light of the Nave, your device might need a bit of help locking onto it. Using your phone, simply tap on the planet to set the focus. Be sure to zoom in and double-check your shot to capture those fine details.

Boost the contrast: To really bring out the warm, orange glow of the Mars sculpture, try slightly underexposing your shot. Tap the planet and use the exposure slider to darken the image slightly.

Foreground magic: Adding some foreground elements can really elevate your Mars photos! Take a moment to wander around the Cathedral to find interesting treasures and objects for the foreground. Monuments, statues, arches and other details around the Nave can make your shot stand out beautifully. Enjoy exploring and experimenting with this technique!
