Step into the captivating world of Resilience in Clay, our summer exhibition open until 31 August, which celebrates community and human connection.

This thought-provoking showcase of sculptural portraits is accompanied by a series of engaging events designed to ignite the imagination and foster a sense of unity within our community. From immersive talks and artist tours, to inspiring workshops and family drop-in sessions, each event promises a creative and enjoyable experience.


Artist Talks and Tours

On 20th June at 2PM we invite you to join us for an intimate gathering with our exhibiting artist Kate Viner. The Cathedral Fellowship, Artist Spaces in Sacred Places offers a unique opportunity to make new friends, engage in stimulating talks, and enjoy a cup of tea together. Gain insights from Rebecca Lewry-Gray, the Cathedral's Visitor Experience Manager, and Oliver Tubb, Head of Communications, who will provide an intriguing glimpse into the Cathedral's upcoming programme. Admission to this event requires a £2.00 donation, and no prior booking is required.

On 8th July at 2:00 PM and 12th July at 10:30 AM, artist Kate Viner will be taking participants on an exclusive tour of Resilience in Clay with two Artist Tour & Q&A sessions. Find out more about the exhibition's genesis, development and creative process, plus discover some of the stories behind the sculptures, the inspirations that sparked their creation, and gain a deeper appreciation for the resilience and human experiences they embody. At the end of each tour, Kate will also be holding a special Q&A session. Tickets are priced at £5.00 per person, and booking is essential.

Charity Concert

We’re delighted to be teaming up with the University of Chichester to present a specialSong for Sanctuary charity concert to raise awareness and funds for refugees from around the world, including Ukraine. Taking place on Saturday 1st July at 7:30PM, enjoy an enthralling evening of live music within the ambient setting of our Cathedral. Tickets cost £25 per person and pre-booking is essential. Proceeds from this concert will be donated to Sanctuary in Chichester.

Clay Portrait Workshop

Unleash your creativity on 8th August at 9:30AM in a captivating Clay Portrait Workshop led by the exhibition’s artist Kate Viner. Discover the fascinating world of clay portraiture as Kate guides you through the process, teaching essential techniques to bring faces to life. This beginner-friendly workshop is suitable for all skill levels and will take place in the spectacular setting of the Vicars' Hall, located on the Cathedral Green. You can also enjoy a unique opportunity to explore the sculptures up close and gain inspiration from their stories. The workshop costs £60 per person (or £110.00 for a joint ticket, saving £10) and includes a special tour of the exhibition as well as a delicious lunch tailored to your dietary needs.

Immersive Experiences Running Throughout the Summer

Embark on a transformative journey through the Cathedral with the Seeking Refuge trail. The trail will take you on a tour of treasured artworks and memorials that bear witness to the stories of individuals who have sought refuge from adversity. The self-guided trail allows you to delve into their resilient narratives and reflect on the enduring power of the human spirit in the face of persecution. No booking is required - simply follow the trail found at the back of our Resilience in Clay leaflet.  

Be part of our Common Thread community exhibition - a remarkable collection of artworks crafted by individuals involved in Resilience in Clay. We invite you to contribute to the exhibition by creating and adding your own unique piece to this collective representation of human connection.


Artistic Exploration for Families

Aimed at families wanting to explore, play and discover their artistic talents, Making Faces is a free drop-in workshop led by Kate Viner. Taking place on Friday 11th August between 11.00am and 2.00pm, the workshop will encourage you to set your imagination free and create stunning masterpieces inspired by Kate's sculptures and the fascinating faces found throughout the Cathedral. No prior experience is needed; simply bring your enthusiasm and curiosity. No booking required.

Also for our younger visitors, we have the Resilience in Clay Children's Trail. This engaging trail encourages children to seek out the hidden faces and expressions that adorn the ancient walls of our Cathedral. Each face tells a unique story, from the 12th-century Romanesque Reliefs to the 21st-century mosaic of St. Dominic. Running until 31 August, pick up a free trail on arrival.
