Inspired by Luke Jerram’s Marswhich is on display in the Cathedral nave this autumnwe have planned an out-of-this-world programme of fun and interactive events, perfect for the whole family to enjoy this half term. 

All ages will delight in the range of activities that take influence from the Red Planet above. From space-themed stories beneath Mars to creative workshops, keep reading for a full run down of our half term events.


Mission to Mars, Family Trail | Saturday 28th October – Saturday 2nd November

We have teamed up with Chichester BID to create a fun, free family trail which will have you jetting off to discover the hidden planets around Chichester city centre. Pick up your space passport from participating businesses and collect all eight planets before landing at the Cathedral to marvel at Mars. Each completed passport will be entered into a prize draw to win signed books by astronaut Tim Peake!

Mars Makers Family Workshop | Saturday 26th October 2024, 10.30am and 12.00pm

Calling all budding engineers, inventors and astronauts - NASA needs you! On Saturday 26th October, young explorers can embark on a mission to build their own spacecraft to Mars! With surprise challenges along the way, once the spaceships are complete, the crew will assemble beneath Mars to blast off on a top-secret quest to the Red Planet. 

Recommended age 5+. Pre-booking required. We ask for a voluntary contribution of £4.00 per child.

Under 5's Storytelling under Mars | Monday 28th October 2024, 10.00am – 10.30am

Ignite their imaginations and go on a cosmic adventure as we share space themed stories and crafts beneath Mars. These free drop-in sessions will have little ones mesmerised. Older siblings are welcome to join the session.

Martian Treats: Pizza decorating with Cloisters Kitchen & Garden | Monday 28th and Wednesday 30th October 2024, 10.30am and 2.00pm

Unleash your creativity and hone your culinary skills at these fun pizza decoration workshops run by Cloisters Kitchen & Garden. Perfect for the whole family, participants will learn about food whilst getting stuck in helping to make this delicious treat.

For ages 4+. £6 per child/pizza. Pre-booking required.

Mars in Orbit with The Average Scientist | Thursday 31st October 2024, 11.00am, 2.00pm, 4.00pm in Vicars' Hall and 6.00pm in the South Transept

Discover the secrets of the Martian planet and explore the possibility of life on Mars as astrophysicist Ian Hall, FRAS, and exoplanet research scientist Charlotte Alexander, FRAS, take you on a fascinating exploration of Mars and beyond. 

From budding young astronauts to fully grown space enthusiasts, this inspirational talk is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the mysteries of Mars and space. Our 6.00pm session includes entry to the Evening Viewing of Mars.

People stand below Mars

Evening Viewings of Mars | 25th, 26th & 31st October and 1st & 2nd November 2024

If you're hoping to create unforgettable half-term memories with your family, don’t miss the Evening Viewings of Mars. During these special timed slots, you can enjoy the Red Planet in the atmospheric light of dusk, accompanied by a dramatic soundtrack created by Dan Jones. Tickets start from just £3.00 per child and £6.00 per adult, with pre-booking advised.

City illuminations | 21st October – 3rd November 

To complement the Mars installation, Chichester District Council will be lighting up the city with space-themed illuminations. Illuminations can be seen at locations including the corner of Crane Street, the end of South Street above Ripples and West Street above Franco Manca, among others. As well as the vibrant light displays, there will be live music from ‘The Martians’ who will perform on selected nights throughout the exhibition near and around the light installations.
