Stonepillow provide support 365 days a year across Chichester and Arun, supporting and empowering homeless people offering a complete recovery journey focusing on improving health and wellbeing, towards sustainable independence and wellbeing.

During Stonepillow's Big Sleep Out, participants build a shelter on the Cathedral Green for the night out of cardboard to help raise funds and awareness for Stonepillow and give a small insight into the harsh realities of rough sleeping.

New for this year is a special photography exhibition entitled 1 in 300,000, on display in the Cathedral from Friday 20th September 2024 as part of this year's Big Sleep Out. It will highlight the transformative work of Stonepillow.

Created by social documentary photographer Andrew Cameron, the exhibition features 11 powerful images that reveal the human stories behind homelessness. He spent 12 months working closely with Stonepillow’s clients, staff, and volunteers, capturing moments of challenge, as well as resilience and hope.

It offers a rare glimpse into the lives of individuals experiencing homelessness, demonstrating that with compassion and community support, there is the possibility of a different life for those affected. It’s estimated that 300,000 people are currently homeless in England.

"It's been a privilege to work with Stonepillow," photographer, Andrew Cameron, said of the exhibition. "Through these images, I aim to show the potential and strength of those affected by homelessness. With the right support, people can rebuild their lives, and I’m proud to play a part in raising awareness for this important cause."

Heidi – Heidi served in the Army for 13 years and left with undiagnosed PTSD. Her husband died, leaving her and two small children. She tried to cope but was eventually hospitalised with poor mental health. Her children lived with her family, her dog was re-homed, and Heidi was evicted whilst still in hospital. Drawing helped her back to health.
