During the national period of mourning, the Cathedral gave thanks for the life of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in a variety ways.
On Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th September we held a special service of Choral Evensong with Thanksgiving for the Life of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, led by TheDean of Chichester, The Very Reverend Stephen Waine and preached by The Bishop of Chichester, The Right Reverend Dr Martin Warner. The Sunday service was attended by civic dignitaries from across the County, with over 1,200 people joining us for these services.
We welcomed over 10,000 people to the Cathedral during the national period of mourning. Paradise, the green space within our 600 year-old Cloisters, was decorated with flowers and gifts in memory, and the Book of Condolence filled with thousands of messages.
Visitors also contributed to a display in the Northern Aisle with their own drawings, prayers and reflections paying homage to Her Majesty.
The Cathedral Bell Ringers rang unmuffled for the Proclaimation of King Charles III on Saturday 10th September (below) and fully muffled apart from the tenor backstroke immediately prior to the State Funeral Service of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey on Monday 19th September.
West Sussex Records Office shared memories of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's visits to the Cathedral on 30th July 1956 and 27th March 1986 from their archive. You can read more here>>
