Colin’s journey to becoming a guide is a testament to his passion for sharing the rich history, art and musical heritage found within our Cathedral’s walls.

Inspired by St David's Cathedral

Colin first considered becoming a tour guide some twenty-five years ago during a guided tour of St David's Cathedral in Wales. As he listened to the guide, he remarked to his wife, "I could do this." However, it wasn't until a decade ago, after moving from Surrey to Chichester, that Colin was able to turn this aspiration into reality. He and his wife became regular visitors to Chichester Cathedral and in 2016, after attending a talk by head guide Judith, Colin decided to become a volunteer guide—a decision, he reflects, that was one of the best he's ever made.

A fulfilling guiding experience

Colin has been a volunteer tour guide at Chichester Cathedral for eight years. Each tour he leads is unique, offering new challenges and learning opportunities. He thrives on the dynamic nature of guiding, finding joy in the diversity of questions and interests visitors bring. Colin particularly enjoys the mornings before the official tours begin, roving the Cathedral and sharing his knowledge with a variety of visitors. Whether answering specific questions or revealing unexpected insights, Colin ensures that each visitor leaves with a deeper appreciation for the Cathedral.

A journey through the Cathedral

One of Colin’s favourite routes within the Cathedral starts at the entrance and moves through the baptistry, home to "The Baptism of Christ" painting by Hans Feibusch. Continuing along past the south transept to the two Norman Reliefs depicting the Raising of Lazarus, Colin describes this 300-foot walk as akin to journeying through the ministry of Jesus. However, it is the Chagall stained glass window that Colin takes the most pleasure in sharing with visitors.

Illuminating the Chagall window

Colin’s tours bring to life the story behind the Chagall stained glass window. He explains Marc Chagall’s background as a Hasidic Jew who grew up in the Jewish Pale in what is now Belarus, and the significance of the red hues in the window, which are rare in Chagall's work and signify praise. Colin provides detailed insights into the figures depicted in the window—dancing, singing, and playing music—as well as the strange hybrid creatures that populate the scene. His personal connection to Chagall's work deepens his narrative—Colin’s great-grandfather is buried at All Saints' Church, Tudeley in Kent, which houses twelve Chagall windows. His visits there have enriched his understanding and fascination with Chagall’s artistry.

Colin Thorpe is one of several volunteer guides at our Cathedral. Their fascinating tours can be tailored to specific areas of interest. We invite you to experience their knowledge and insights first hand.
