The digital inclusion project, HomeTech, has proved a massive hit with members of the Cathedral community with around eighty people engaging with it from the start.
Launched at an event in Vicars’ Hall in November last year, the first workshops were delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic until February 2022. The five weekly workshops were designed as an introduction to home technology, covering everything from smart TVs and phones, to smart speakers and computers.
The project was supported with a grant from AllChurches Trust which enabled the purchase of laptops and tablets for members to use.
The Cathedral’s Volunteer Co-ordinator, Carolyn Atkinson said:
"We already knew that other organisations were already offering support with computers, tablets and phones, but it was clear many of our members were not engaging. West Sussex Libraries have an amazing digital offer including learning opportunities and computer buddy sessions, so they were a natural partner to work with."
Emma from West Sussex Libraries joined some of the workshops to tell members about the amazing digital services libraries has to offer including ebooks, audio books and support for digital technology.
Jackie Usher, Team Manager – Digital Access at West Sussex Libraries said:
"Supporting residents to increase their digital skills and access the Internet safely is one of our key priorities. This was a fantastic opportunity to help Chichester Cathedral with their HomeTech project and to support their community."
