Chichester Cathedral has been working alongside Chichester College, offering an insightful work experience opportunity for students.
We have been thrilled to host students from Chichester College, who are working to gain an exclusive insight to the day-to-day running of the Cathedral as they begin to explore the exciting prospects of their future careers. The students who are studying at Level 2 and 3 are on 4-week rotations, each week exploring a different part of the Cathedral's life.
We are delighted to have been welcoming students from Chichester College to the Cathedral since October 2021. This special partnership has given the ‘Travel and Tourism’ student learners the opportunity to gain valuable volunteering experience with us and the chance to contribute positively to the life of the Cathedral. We have benefited hugely from meeting these young people who bring with them enthusiasm and new ideas, as they set out on their future career path.
Carolyn Atkinson, Volunteer & HR Co-ordinator
To mark Student Volunteering Week, which takes place from 7th - 13th February 2022, we asked the current students on placement to create a short blog about their time at the Cathedral so far:
Q: What have you learnt?
A: We have learnt about the roof restoration. As the roof is repaired, copper is replaced with lead & part of the roof is green from the remaining copper. Also, Chichester Cathedral is the only medieval cathedral in England to have a separate bell tower.
Q: What do you like about the Cathedral?
Levi: How awe-inspiring the Cathedral looks when you are standing outside.
Louis: The Cathedral is architecturally pleasing.
Rosie: The art in the Cathedral & the stained-glass windows, when they reflect on the walls making a beautiful pattern.
Q: What do you look forward to on your placement?
A: We look forward to meeting new people, experiencing different cultures and new areas.
Q: What more would you like to do during your time here?
A: We want to help people visiting and make them feel welcome.
Q: How will this placement help you in the future?
A: We will learn necessary skills for jobs we might want to do in the future, such as customer service and gaining confidence. Also, this is a good opportunity to gain work experience on our CV, which can make them stand out more.
