After seventeen years of dedicated service, Howard Waddell is to retire as Head Verger of Chichester Cathedral this summer.

Howard has worked alongside a dedicated team overseeing the day-to-day running of the Cathedral on behalf of Chapter, ensuring that the Cathedral is presented in the very best way at all times for worshippers, visitors and the general public, providing a safe and welcoming environment.

Previously Howard held verging positions at Carlisle Cathedral, Hereford Cathedral and Blackburn Cathedral.

The Dean of Chichester, The Very Reverend Stephen Waine said:

“We are enormously grateful to Howard for his commitment to all aspects of the Cathedral’s life, especially to its worship, and for his care for so many people over the years. Howard’s time here has been a time of true service and self-giving, and he has exercised his vocation as Head Verger with humility and distinction.”

Howard said:

“I would like to thank the Cathedral community: our staff team, volunteers and congregation, and in particular our Dean, Stephen, for his trust and confidence during my time at Chichester Cathedral. I am also incredibly grateful to our Assistant Verger Tim for his hard work and positive attitude – particularly as the Cathedral emerged from the pandemic.”

All at Chichester Cathedral wish Howard a long, restful, and well-deserved retirement.
