Dean’s Lectures 2025 | Liturgical Art in Chichester and beyond with James Blackstone

Sacred Art at Chichester Cathedral: Reflections on the Past, Present and Future. Booking for the Dean's Lectures opens on Friday 14th February 2025.

As part of the celebrations of our 950th anniversary, these lectures will reflect on aspects of the artistic and cultural heritage of Chichester Cathedral, the ways in which these speak to us amid the challenges and opportunities of our current time, and their relevance for future generations.

Jim Blackstone, with Aidan Hart and Martin Earle, is part of The Chichester Workshop for Liturgical Art, working in association with the Cathedral. The Workshop undertakes commissions across a broad range of traditional media, and offers an education programme that includes both practical artistic training and theological engagement with the principles of Christian iconography. Jim is an Anglican priest and has published research on Eastern Orthodox contemplative theology.

This lecture will combine, in different measure, reflection on art, culture, history, theology and spirituality. All are welcome and no prior knowledge of the Cathedral or subject area is expected.

The programme on each evening will be:

  • 6.30pm Drinks
  • 7.00pm Lecture
  • 7.45pm Questions/discussion
  • 8.30pm Finish
