As we prepare to mark #SussexDay on Tuesday 16th June, the feast day of Saint Richard, we invite you to join us in celebration through exploring the resources below. From a virtual pilgrimage, to an online service – there’s plenty of ways to get involved.

Remember to share your experiences with us using the hashtag #ChichesterCathedral on social media.

1. A Virtual Pilgrimage

Complete the final steps of a pilgrimage to the Shrine of Saint Richard at Chichester Cathedral.

This virtual pilgrimage, from the Cathedral’s West Door to the historic Shrine, is an opportunity to discover more about the well-trodden route and the history of the many Chapels, objects and art along the way, and also - we hope - to be a source of comfort and hope for you at home.

The Shrine of St Richard, a bishop of Chichester in the 13th century whose relics lie behind the High Altar, is considered by some to be the third most important in the land, after the shrines of St Thomas à Becket at Canterbury and Our Lady at Walsingham. Over the centuries, it has drawn many to both the city and the Cathedral.

Today, many thousands come to the Shrine during the year to pray, light candles, and reflect upon their own lives. As many are now unable to do so in person, we invite you to make this sacred journey virtually.

If you have completed our Virtual Pilgrimage, please share your experience with us using the hashtag #VirtualPilgrimChichester

2. Online Service

The Chancellor of Chichester Cathedral, The Reverend Canon Dan Inman, leads our service for the Feast Day of Saint Richard. The Service will be made available to watch on Tuesday 16th June at 10.00am.

3. An Office of Prayer for Saint Richard’s Day

Individuals and households are invited to use this short office of prayer on St Richard’s Day to pray for: the unity of God’s Church; for an end to the global pandemic; for the peace of the world; and to remember before God the Faithful Departed.
