Angela MartinChichester Cathedral is delighted to announce the appointment of the Venerable Angela Martin, Archdeacon of Horsham and Vicar of Forest Row, as a new Member of Chapter.

The Chapter is made up of both Clergy and Lay staff who work in unison to undertake the successful running of the Cathedral. The derivation of the name ‘Chapter’ comes from the gathering together of monks or canons for the reading of a chapter of the Bible or a heading of the order's rule.

Angela has served in the Diocese of Chichester since 2008, when she was ordained at the Cathedral. In this time, she has sat on a number of committees and groups, including as a member of the Diocesan Mission Fund and on the Diocesan Environmental Action Group.

Until recently she acted as an Honorary Liturgical Chaplain to The Bishop of Chichester, the Right Reverend Dr Martin Warner, and served the Rural Dean for East Grinstead Deanery.

Angela said:

“It is a great privilege to now be called to play an integral part in the continued legacy of the Cathedral’s heritage. To have the opportunity to add to it and pass it on to the next generation. This new role working alongside the Dean and Chapter is one that I am very much looking forward to.”

The Dean of Chichester, the Very Reverend Stephen Waine said:

“We warmly welcome Angela as a new member of Chapter, and look forward to working closely with her at this important time in the Cathedral’s life – as we continue to rebuild from the impact of the pandemic, and look forward to our 950th anniversary and sharing our new vision.”

Angela was born to a farming family in Sussex. She cites her upbringing in the rural countryside as inspiration for her ministry. Prior to being ordained, she led a successful career in microbiology for a large pharmaceutical company.  Angela departed this role to look after her three children, whilst volunteering in her local community.
