Chichester and Lichfield Cathedrals are delighted to announce the launch of the Cathedral Theology Network – a new platform for free, accessible online theological teaching for people across the Church of England.

Emerging from the online teaching on the Bible and theology that was undertaken during the first and second lockdowns at Chichester and Lichfield, both cathedrals are working together to provide a broader repertoire of lectures, study-days and conferences in theology, spirituality and biblical studies to people across the dioceses of Chichester and Lichfield and beyond.

Speaking about the vision for the new network, the Chancellor of Chichester Cathedral, the Reverend Dr Daniel Inman, said:

“Cathedrals have been at the heart of the Church of England’s mission to educate and evangelise for over a millennium. As the teaching-seats of bishops, they are positioned to teach and defend the faith in the public square and, historically, have been important local centres of learning - instrumental in founding many of our oldest schools, theological colleges and indeed universities.”

The Chancellor of Lichfield Cathedral, the Reverend Dr Gregory Platten, said:

“We are committed to using technology imaginatively to enhance the vocations of cathedrals as centres of Christian teaching for the whole Church of England. We believe this to be a basic pillar of our duties as cathedral chancellors, but also increasingly aware that understanding the faith with historical and critical intelligence is needed across the Church of England.”

The first academic year features courses on the life and practice of the early Church, the early Dominicans, the psychology of religion, and the history of the Church in England from the Middle Ages to the present. In association with The International Journal for the Study of the Christian Church, of which both canon chancellors are editors, the Network will also feature a conference in December on theological responses to the pandemic.
